Pets in Rentals: Tasmania's New Pet Laws

From 20 March 2026, renting with pets in Tasmania will look very different.

The Residential Tenancy Amendment (Pets) Act 2025 introduces a new, structured process that gives tenants the right to request a pet in their rental home.

What’s Changing?

From 20 March 2026:

• Tenants must submit a formal pet request before bringing a pet into the property.
• Blanket “no pets” clauses will no longer be valid.
• Landlords have 14 days to respond.
• Refusals must be based on reasonable grounds, such as genuine concerns about nuisance or safety.
• If a landlord wishes to refuse, they must apply to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT) within 14 days to justify that decision.

Importantly, tenants remain responsible for any damage caused by their pets beyond reasonable wear and tear.
