Gigi’s Diner, a little Americana in Battery Point

Red booths, stacked pancakes and a playful take on comfort food

Among the sandstone, warehouses and Georgian architecture of Battery Point, Gigi’s Diner offers something deliberately unexpected.

Located on Castray Esplanade, moments from Salamanca and the waterfront, Gigi’s takes the familiarity of the classic American diner and gives it a distinctly Hobart interpretation.

Red booths, diner stools and playful details reference the nostalgia of old-school Americana, while a more contemporary design sensibility keeps the space firmly in the present.

It is bold without taking itself too seriously, and perhaps that is exactly the point.

A modern take on the diner

The traditional diner has always been about more than food. It is a neighbourhood meeting place, somewhere equally suited to an early breakfast, a long brunch or a quick coffee before the day begins.

Gigi’s brings that philosophy to Hobart, creating a space designed for locals and visitors to settle into rather than simply pass through. The atmosphere is lively and informal, with a menu built around familiar comfort food given a contemporary twist.

There is also something particularly appealing about finding such an unapologetically playful interior within one of Hobart’s most historic neighbourhoods.

It is a contrast that feels right at home in a city increasingly comfortable mixing heritage with new ideas.

On the table

Pancakes arrive with cultured butter and Canadian maple syrup, while fried chicken and waffles embrace the diner’s American influence.

Breakfast moves easily into lunch with burgers, chicken tenders, steak frites and macaroni cheese, alongside lighter options and a dedicated children’s menu.

Tasmanian produce provides a local counterpoint to those American references, giving the concept a sense of place rather than simply recreating something found elsewhere.

It is food designed to be enjoyed rather than overthought. Familiar, generous and just nostalgic enough.

The neighbourhood diner

Part of Gigi’s appeal is its location. Battery Point and Salamanca are often associated with heritage, galleries, markets and long-established dining institutions. Gigi’s adds something different to that mix.

A booth, a stack of pancakes and coffee in the morning can become lunch after a walk through Salamanca, while its proximity to the waterfront makes it an easy starting point for a slower day exploring the city.
