'Millers Cottage' 1820s charm and history

If only the walls could talk... the stories they could tell.

This gorgeous Georgian cottage c1820, was at the forefront of Hobart's maritime boom and remains one of Battery Point's oldest houses, pre-dating almost all of its surroundings, and even having housed five generations of one family.

For the current owners, this significant cottage represents everything that historic Battery Points stands for - and is to be cherished. 'Miller's Cottage' originally built as a humble workman’s hut, was later purchased by renown miller and businessman James Cowgill. Hobart at that time was a thriving whaling town with notable landmarks such as Salamanca's sandstone warehouses, Kelly Steps as well as St Georges Anglican Church, all icons that 31 Cromwell pre-dates.

One particular icon, though now demolished, was Luckman Mill and was built by James Luckman directly behind this home. This mill was eventually purchased by James Cowgill, however it was retired in 1890. During the demolition of the mill, the convict bricks of the main structure were repurposed and fashioned into what is now the left hand side wall at the rear of the home.

At street frontage, one is met with the beauty of the cottage's quaint verandah and picket fence reflecting the character and charm of its era. Hand carved 200 year old timber boards and original penal colony convict bricks feature inside and play an integral part in retaining the historical significance of this home which has only recently undergone a carefully considered restoration, renovation and upgrade.

A contemporary yet classic style kitchen flows effortlessly through to the dining and outdoor entertainment spaces, forming what is essentially the social hub of the home.
This fusion between original leadlight as well as modern glass windows has perfectly complimented this home, certainly enhancing the view out to the courtyard and its accompanying verdant garden.

Towards the rear of the home, an additional and new second storey awaits casting views across to the River Derwent, as well as the iconic rooftops of the surrounding area. Today, the property stands as one of Battery Point and Hobart's finest examples of what life was like for the residence of Old Hobart Town.
